The Action Youth Outreach Program was founded in 2004 by Mr. Freddie Jones. Mr. Jones founded the AYO because he had seen firsthand what challenges the youth in urban communities continue to deal with in regards to education and economic disparity. He wanted to give these students and opportunity to develop and hone entrepreneurial skills through after school development programs. When the AYO became the Youth Entrepreneurship Development Foundation in August 2011, the ideas and curriculum were expanded to encompass the idea of improving the whole student. The YEDF has adopted a holistic approach to learning through mind, body and spirit.
The current modules focus on teaching the student to discover their potential, set and reach S.M.A.R.T (Specific, Measurable, Appropriate, Realistic and Timely) goals, work as a team and apply what they learn to real world situations. The modules also focus on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) education which is of national importance as the youth of America have some of the lowest standardized test scores in these areas. Careers in the STEM fields have consistently shown to be the highest paying and most rewarding. The “Living Healthy”-Fit Plan teaches the student the value in healthy eating and living through knowledge of proper nutrition and the necessity for physical activity. With the advent of these modules, the Youth Entrepreneurship Development Foundation is working towards improving the student from the inside out. With each child that is given a chance, the community and everyone within it is also given a chance.
